Klaviyo vs SendGrid for Shopify: You're Comparing Two Different Tools

People search “Klaviyo vs SendGrid” as if it’s Coke vs Pepsi, and most of the articles that answer them play along with a feature-by-feature table. We run both tools for Shopify clients, and the honest answer is shorter and more useful: they are not competitors. Klaviyo is a marketing platform. SendGrid is a transactional email service. A store that’s asking which one to pick is usually asking the wrong question, and sometimes needs both.

The Short Answer

If you want to send campaigns, abandoned cart emails, welcome series, and win-backs to your Shopify customers: Klaviyo, and it isn’t close. If you need email that your own systems send, order-related messages from a custom app, invoices, alerts, account emails on a headless build: SendGrid. If a developer set your store up on SendGrid “for email marketing,” that’s worth revisiting. If someone is quoting you Klaviyo to send your app’s system emails, same.

What Klaviyo Actually Is

Klaviyo is built to make money from your customer list. It syncs deeply with Shopify, knows who bought what and when, and turns that into segments, campaigns, and automated flows that recover revenue. Its editor, its analytics, and its pricing all assume a marketer is driving. For a Shopify store treating email as a revenue channel, it’s the default for a reason, and we’ve compared it to the other marketing tools in Klaviyo vs Mailchimp and our best email app for Shopify roundup.

What SendGrid Actually Is

SendGrid is an API that sends email when your code tells it to. No flow builder aimed at merchants, no Shopify segmentation, no revenue dashboard. What it gives you instead is exactly what a marketing platform doesn’t: send anything, to anyone, triggered by any event in your systems, at a price that rounds to nothing compared to Klaviyo. Developers love it because it’s a clean, reliable building block.

The email it sends is called transactional: messages a specific action triggers for a specific person. Password resets, invoices, shipping exceptions, custom order confirmations from an app. Nobody “subscribes” to these, and no marketing tool is designed to send them.

Why the Confusion Exists

SendGrid does technically offer marketing campaign features, and Klaviyo can technically send transactional email. That overlap is where stores get hurt:

  • SendGrid as your marketing platform means rebuilding, badly, what Klaviyo already does: no native Shopify segments, no prebuilt ecommerce flows, everything wired by hand. The monthly fee you save goes straight into developer time, and then some.
  • Klaviyo as your transactional sender means paying marketing-platform prices for plumbing, and coupling your app’s system emails to a tool your marketing team owns and edits. We’ve seen a well-meaning campaign cleanup silently break an app’s notification emails. Keep the streams separate.

There’s a deliverability reason for the separation too. Marketing email gets marked as spam sometimes; that’s life. You do not want those signals dragging down the sender reputation of the emails that must arrive, your order and account messages. Different tools, ideally different sending domains, keep one from poisoning the other.

When a Shopify Store Needs Both

Plenty of our clients run exactly this stack: Shopify’s native notifications for standard order emails, Klaviyo for marketing and flows, and SendGrid behind a custom app or integration for the operational email neither of the first two covers. That’s not tool sprawl, that’s each tool doing the one job it’s good at. Alex wrote up the technical side, including when SMS and Twilio enter the picture, in customizing Shopify notifications.

How to Decide in 30 Seconds

Ask who writes the email. If a marketer writes it and a list receives it, Klaviyo. If code writes it and one customer receives it because of something that just happened, SendGrid or Shopify’s own notifications. If you’re unsure which bucket your case falls in, it’s probably transactional, because marketing use cases tend to announce themselves.

And if you’d rather have someone just look at your setup and tell you what goes where, that’s a conversation we have with Shopify brands all the time. Our Klaviyo email marketing service covers the revenue side, our integrations team covers the transactional side, and a quick call will tell you which one you’re actually shopping for.
