Headless Shopify Agency

Headless Shopify is the most oversold service in ecommerce. Plenty of agencies will happily replatform your working theme onto a custom frontend because the invoice is bigger. We take the opposite approach: we’re a headless Shopify agency that starts by checking whether headless is the right call at all.

When it is the right call, we build on Hydrogen, Shopify’s first-party React framework, deployed on Oxygen. Staying first-party matters. Cart, checkout, product data: all of it flows through supported APIs instead of a stack of third-party glue, which is the difference between a storefront your team can operate and one that quietly becomes unmaintainable.

When Headless Shopify Pays Off

The honest checklist we run with every prospect:

  • Content-heavy storefronts. Editorial and lookbook content managed in a real CMS, rendered alongside commerce without theme-section contortions.
  • Custom buying experiences. Product configurators and bundle builders with app-like interactivity that Liquid and theme JavaScript can’t express cleanly.
  • Multi-storefront architecture. Several brands or regions sharing one frontend codebase and design system.
  • A team that ships frontend code. Headless hands you ownership of the frontend. If nobody on your side (or on retainer) writes React, a theme keeps you safer.

If none of those apply, we’ll say so. A well-built custom theme delivers most of the performance story for a fraction of the cost, and our Shopify theme development service exists for exactly that case.

What a Hydrogen Build Includes

  • Readiness assessment. An audit of your store and your team, ending in a written recommendation. If we recommend against headless, the assessment is still yours to keep.
  • Architecture. Storefront API data design, CMS integration (Sanity, Contentful, or your pick), caching, and cart strategy.
  • The build. Hydrogen components with automated tests, checkout wiring, analytics, and structured data carried over from your current store.
  • SEO parity. URL mapping, redirects, meta and schema handling, and crawl verification before cutover. Rankings you’ve earned come with you.
  • Launch and handoff. Oxygen deployment, monitoring, performance baselines, and documentation your team can actually operate from.

Why Us for Headless

We’ve spent 14+ years on Shopify, including engineering time inside Shopify itself, and we build custom Shopify apps on the same APIs Hydrogen consumes every week. That matters for headless more than for any other service: a headless storefront is a custom application, and you want it built by a team that ships and maintains production Shopify applications, not one that treats it as a big theme job.

Headless projects also tend to sit inside bigger technical roadmaps. If you need someone to own that roadmap, our fractional ecommerce CTO service covers architecture and vendor decisions, and for enterprise storefronts on Plus, checkout extensibility and Functions come into scope through our Shopify Plus agency work.

FAQs

What is headless Shopify?

Headless separates your storefront frontend from Shopify's theme layer. Shopify keeps running the commerce engine, from products through checkout, behind its APIs, while your frontend is a custom application you control completely. You gain flexibility and lose the simplicity of theme editing, which is exactly the trade-off we help you evaluate.

What is Shopify Hydrogen?

Hydrogen is Shopify's own React framework for building headless storefronts, and Oxygen is the hosting Shopify provides for it. It's the path we recommend for most headless builds because it stays close to the platform: the cart and checkout integrations are first-party rather than glued together.

Do I actually need headless?

Most stores don't. Modern Online Store 2.0 themes cover the majority of design and performance needs at a fraction of the cost. Headless earns its keep when you need storefront experiences a theme cannot express: heavy editorial content, complex product configurators, multi-brand frontends on shared infrastructure, or app-like interactivity. We'll tell you which side of that line you're on before any code is written.

How much does a headless Shopify build cost?

Meaningfully more than a theme build, both up front and ongoing, because you own the frontend that Shopify's theme layer would otherwise maintain for you. Typical Hydrogen builds start in the mid five figures. If that number doesn't clear your ROI bar, that's a sign a custom theme is the better investment, and we build those too.

Will going headless hurt my SEO?

It shouldn't, but it can when done carelessly. Hydrogen supports server-side rendering, so crawlers get full HTML. The risks are in the details: URL parity, redirects, structured data, and meta handling all move into your codebase. We treat SEO parity as a launch requirement, not an afterthought.

Can you take over an existing headless storefront?

Yes. We pick up Hydrogen and other headless builds that need stabilizing, new features, or performance work. We start with a short audit so you know the state of the code before committing.
